These findings provide continuing evidence that periodontal evaluation and treatment is an essential component of care in preventing cardiovascular diseases, particularly CHD. Oral health care providers should work proactively with cardiologists to ensure that all patients receive periodontal evaluation and treatment as an integral component of their health care.
Importantly, this analysis emphasizes the critical nature of periodontal care in reducing the level of both local and systemic bacterial exposure. Early diagnosis and treatment, and frequent, routine continuing care appointments become critical to monitor and ensure periodontal health. Daily oral hygiene measures must be completed by the patient to reduce bacteria levels through both mechanical and chemical means. Clinicians should recommend that patients floss daily and use antibacterial products, such as a triclosan-containing dentifrice that demonstrates both antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, to help achieve a healthy periodontal status. The findings of this article challenge and encourage clinicians to continue to teach and motivate patients to adhere to these professional recommendations.
